Former deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, is due to go on trial in Britain on Tuesday along with family members for alleged organ harvesting. Ekweremadu, 60, will face trial at the Old Bailey court on Tuesday morning, accused along with his wife, daughter, and a doctor of bringing a 21-year-old man from Nigeria to have his kidney removed. Prosecutors said the defendants allegedly planned to have a kidney removed from a 21-year-old Nigerian man, so that it could be given to the politician’s daughter, Sonia. The man is said to have raised the alarm after refusing to consent to the procedure, following preliminary tests at a north London hospital. Charges were brought after the man went to the police in a town outside London, and the Ekweremadus were arrested in June last year at London’s Heathrow airport after flying into the UK. A man in his mid-30s, Tochukwu Ihenacho, on Saturday, beat his younger brother, Philip Ihenacho, to a state of coma for spending N5,000 new notes given to him to keep. The incident, it was gathered, happened in the Pipeline area of Kubwa, a satellite town in Bwari Area Council of the FCT. A witness, Hassan Aliyu, told our reporter that, “Last Tuesday, Tochukuwu gave Philip his younger brother N5,000 new notes to keep for him. They live together. You know how difficult it is to get the new notes. On Saturday, Tochukuwu requested for the money. After he was told it had been spent, he beat his younger brother to a state of unconsciousness. Some family members were shocked to learn that their deceased relative, whose body had been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, Ogun State, had disappeared. A video showing a staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), collecting money from registered voters before they can collect their Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC) has surfaced the media space. The act is seen to have taken place at the Commission’s PVC collection centre at Emene, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. The development is coming on the heels of consistent denials by the top officials of the INEC that its staff don’t engage in extortion of registered voters before they can pick their PVCs. Victor Aluko, the INEC director for Voter Education and Publicity, had in one of the Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, described as false, allegations that its staff members were colluding with certain people to prevent eligible Nigerians from collecting their PVCs. “Well, personally, I don’t believe so. I don’t believe that anybody is colluding with anyone to prevent eligible Nigerians from collecting their PVCs. I don’t think so,” he said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has extended the deadline for the swapping of old naira notes till February 10, 2023 The CBN stated this in a release on Sunday. The apex bank said it added – “ a 10-day extension of the deadline from January 31, 2023, to February 10, 2023, to allow for the collection of more old notes. ” This is according to the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele. He also noted that Nigerians would still be able to deposit their old notes directly with the CBN until February 17, 2023 , described as a “grace period.” There has been pressure from many Nigerians and groups concerning the initial January 31 deadline for the old notes, as the scarcity of the newly designed 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes prevailed in the country. A 43-year-old woman in Navakholio, Kakamega county of Kenya was on Saturday, January 28, 2023, arrested after she allegedly attacked her husband and set their house on fire. Navakholo OCPD Richard Omanga said Florence Karakacha was arrested for giving her husband identified as Bramwel Lubanga a thorough beating for reportedly marrying a second wife. Lubanga reportedly lost a part of his lip after his wife bit it off during the feud. The woman allegedly torched the house before heading to the nearest police station. At the station, the woman alleged that her husband had attacked her first. Officers from the station hurriedly arrested the man and booked him at the station. However, upon enquiry from neighbours and family members, the officers discovered that the woman had fought the man after he had married a second wife upon learning that she was allegedly having an affair with his brother.
