A 40-year-old man identified as Gabriel Ojo has been remanded in prison after a human fibroid was discovered in his possession in Kwara State. The suspect was apprehended at Apata community, Eiyenkorin area of the state. The police said that one Moshood Tajudeen, secretary of the Apata community had alerted them of the situation. The charge sheet added: “Concerted efforts led to the arrest of Ojo while human fibroid and other criminal charms were found in his possession. “He confessed that the fibroid found in his house was given to him for burial in May 2022 but kept it in his house.” The prosecutor, Adebayo Thomas, informed the court of a motion ex parte attached to the police report seeking the defendant’s remand in a correctional centre. Magistrate Agbetola Issa, who presided over the case, remanded the suspect and adjourned to October 19. The university’s administration reportedly reacted angrily to the media claim and labeled it false in a statement released in Calabar by the institution’s registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe. In a report sent to the National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday, September 27, an Independent Investigative Panel on Human Rights Violations Against SARS and Other Units of the Nigerian Police indicted 72 police officers. The police officers who were found guilty of the accusations made against them also received harsh recommendations and punishments. While 28 of them were recommended for prosecution, 25 were recommended for dismissal, 15 for disciplinary actions, and four were recommended for demotion. Chairman of the IIP-HRV-A-SARS, Justice Suleiman Galadima, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, said the panel went through 200 petitions from 29 states since its inauguration two years ago. The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission, has ordered vice-chancellors to re-open schools and allow students to resume lectures. This was revealed in a letter signed by Sam Onazi, the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, on behalf of Professor Abubakar Rasheed, the commission’s Executive Secretary. The letter was addressed to all vice-chancellors, Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities. “Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures. Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”, the letter partly reads.
