A man believed to be depressed has killed himself in an apparent suicide in Niger state. According to reports, the man hung himself on a tree inside a bush in Rijau Local Government Area in the state, without the knowledge of his family or neigbours. His corpse was later discovered in the bush after it was noticed he went missing and a search was conducted to locate him. The reason for his action was not given but reports have it that the deceased was unhappy and depressed before allegedly taking his own life. International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH) says 2.5 million children under five years suffer from Acute Malnutrition (SAM) yearly in Nigeria. The Chief Executive Officer of ISMPH, Mrs Moji Makanjuola, said this on Thursday in Bauchi during a one-day meeting with journalists and civil society organisations organised ISMPH. Makanjuola said that UNICEF statistics indicates that 420,000 children out of the figure died yearly from malnutrition in the country. She described the situation as “an extremely dangerous condition that makes children nine times most likely to die from common childhood illness”. Makanjuola named diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria as some of the childhood illness that had taken the lives of such innocent children. She noted that SAM was widespread in the northern part of the country, though all states of the country were affected. Makanjuola regretted that over N21,350 was needed to cure a child suffering from SAM, but regretted that the “political

A suspected cultist has been beaten to death by angry mob along the popular PTI road in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, DAILY POST can report. The incident occurred at about 7pm on Wednesday, February 27. The suspected cultist, who had been allegedly rampaging the area with his cult group, was apprehended by the angry mob, in attempt to rob a lady of her iPhone 6 mobile phone. He was subsequently beaten to stupor before he was allegedly stabbed to death. The incident, which caused serious tension within the area, was misinterpreted for the Effurun crisis. Following the mob action, Warri residents had to take other routes to their houses for fear of being attacked. Commercial shops have also been shutdown by their owners as at the time of filing this report. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has dared Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in the just-concluded general elections, to take President Muhammadu Buhari to court. The Supreme Court has fixed judgment for May 17 this year in a suit by Cross River State Government seeking to set aside the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, The Nation reports. A seven-man panel of the court, led by Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour fixed the date on Thursday after taking arguments from lawyer to parties. Lucius Nwosu (SAN) argued on behalf of the plaintiff (Cross River State), while Dayo Apata, Solicitor General of the Federation (argued for the defendants – the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation). It is the plaintiff’s contention that Onnoghen’s suspension or removal from office by President Muhammadu Buhari, based on an ex-parte order by a lay magistrate (the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal) violates the Constition, particularly Section 292(1).
