A Kano High Court on Wednesday sentenced a 25-year-old man, Umar Yakubu, to death by hanging for stabbing his friend, Ibrahim Adamu, 22, to death during an argument over N20 loan. Yakubu, who lives at Sabuwar Gandu Quarters in Kano, was convicted on a one-count charge of culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code Law. Delivering judgment, Justice Dije Aboki, held that the Prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubts. Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Lamido Soron-Dinki, told the court that on June 13, 2018, at about 11 a.m in Sabiwar Gandu Quarters, Kano, the convict asked the deceased to give him a loan him of N20. Soron-Dinki said the convict the stabbed the deceased in the chest with scissors during an argument over the N20 loan. Soron-Dinki presented six witnesses before the court while the convict defended himself. The Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky-led Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has suspended its streets protests for the release of their leader and his wife, Mallama Zinat. The group, also called the Shi’ites, said the suspension, which it called temporary, was out of its respect for prominent groups and eminent Nigerians who genuinely waded into resolving the problems. In a statement on Wednesday by its spokesman Ibrahim Musa, the movement said it suspended the protests in good faith and out of respect for eminent people and groups whose input in the resolution of the problems appeared genuine. Reiterating IMN’s demand that their leader, his wife, and several others in detention be given their freedom, having been in detention since 2015, Musa said the movement is committed to exploring the new openings to resolve the protracted issues with the government. A 42-year-old man, Konku Aminu, has appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing four live turkeys and one generator. The defendant, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a charge of stealing. The police prosecutor, Insp Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 24 at Local Government Area of Igirigiri Road, in Ado-Ekiti. He alleged that the defendant stole four live turkeys and one thermocool generator valued at N70,000 belonging to one Borisade Kayode. He said the offence contravened section 390 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012. The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses. The defendant pleaded not guilty. His counsel, Mr Timi Omotoso, urged the court to grant his client bail, promising that he would not jump bail. A man has been caught with as many as 17 bags of marijuana in a community in Ogun state. According to a report by The Nation, the police in Ogun have arrested an alleged illegal substance dealer caught with 17 bags of suspected Marijuana. Daniel Elimuya, a resident of 9, General Hospital Street, Iyana-Ira in Agbara, was arrested around 6:30pm on July 28 at Ibafo. It was gathered that the suspect had starched the weeds inside a vehicle he rode in from Delta State enroute Lagos. The Nation gathered that the police received tip off on the vehicle and its content, laid ambush for the described vehicle with registration number GGE782EX and intercepted it.
