Organized labour has commenced mobilization of workers in 15 states of the federation for a strike to press home demand for the full implementation of the new minimum wage of N30,000. The states, according to labour sources, are yet to demonstrate enough commitment in keying into the new dispensation. The bone of contention in most of the states is the consequential adjustment of the new salary structure. Sources said labour leaders had been placed on standby for an industrial action. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to expand categories of visas issued to foreign citizens intending to visit Nigeria from six to 79 classes of visas under the 2020 Visa Policy to be approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. It also clarified that the Visa-on-Arrival (VoA) policy does not mean that foreigners will enter Nigeria without visa, saying that VoA is actually not a type of visa but a process that qualifies a foreign citizen on a short visit to have his visa process at the airport. The Plateau State Police Command has arrested 11 people including community and Fulani leaders following last Sunday’s breakdown of law and order that led to the killing of 17 people and burning of houses and places of worship in Kwatas district of Bokkos Local Government Area. The Senate resolved to investigate the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation over the $396m spent on Turn-Around Maintenance of refineries between 2013 and 2015. This followed the adoption of a motion titled “The Moribund Refineries in the Country” by Senator Yusuf A. Yusuf (APC, Taraba Central). The Senate mandated its Committees on Petroleum Downstream, Upstream and Gas to investigate the expenditures. It also asked the committees to probe the current state of the refineries as well as convoke a stakeholders’ conference with the aim of finding ways to revamp them. Senator Yusuf recalled that Nigeria, through NNPC, had in the past 25 years spent billions of dollars in Turn-Around Maintenance of the refineries, the latest being over $396m spent between 2013 and 2015 without meaningful result.
