Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has faulted the N100m presidential nomination form fee set by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as “immoral” since the country’s minimum is N30,000. Falana made the comment on Thursday, days after the APC fixed the prices for nomination forms for those vying for seats in the 2023 elections. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also pegged its presidential form fee at N40m. “Those outrageous nomination fees are immoral, insensitive, and illegal,” he said during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. The immorality of it is that we have over 90 million Nigerians that have been classified poor. In a country where the minimum wage is about N30,000 and it is not paid by some states, you can’t say you are collecting N100 million or N40 million to purchase a form,” he explained. Operatives of the Force Intelligence Bureau Intelligence Response Team have arrested four notorious arms dealers. They recovered 57 AK-47 rifles and a large catchment of ammunition in Jos, Plateau State, and from other locations across the country. The Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, on Thursday, in a statement, gave the names of the suspects as Hamza Zakari (Hamzo), 20; Abubakar Muhammed (Fancy), 22; Umar Ibrahim, 25; and Muhammed Abdulkarim (Dan-Asabe), 37, all males and residents of Jos. The statement explained that they were arrested following credible intelligence on their nefarious activities in Jos and its environs. Justice Elias Abua of the Cross River State High Court in Calabar has sentenced two former bankers. The convicts are Titus Chima Nwankwo and Utibe-Abasi Ifiok George. They were found guilty of stealing N2,900,000 from the account of a deceased customer, Godfried Francis Osso. The duo had pleaded guilty to separate charges bordering on forgery, conspiracy, breach of trust and stealing. They were arraigned by the Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). After their plea, prosecution counsel, Joshua Abolarin prayed the court to deliver a verdict accordingly. Justice Abua convicted and sentenced George to three months imprisonment with an option of a N100,000 fine. Nwankwo also bagged three months imprisonment with an option of a N50,000 fine. An apprentice tyre dealer, Cissé Abdullahi, has solicited the support of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other philanthropists after his wife was delivered of a set of quadruplets – two boys and two girls. UEFA are looking to scrap two-legged semi-finals in the Champions League, as they ponder further restructuring of the tournament’s format, the UK Times reports. There are already plans in place to change the opening stage of the tournament. The current eight groups of four will be replaced by two leagues of 18 from 2024 onwards. However, those may not be the only new additions for the 2024/2025 season, as UEFA are considering implementing their “week of football” proposals. If enforced, those proposals would see the current two-legged semi-finals replaced with single leg ties and they will be played in one city in a five-day window that also includes the final. The Osun Amotekun Corps has arrested a 33-year-old truck repairer, Afeez Odusanya, for allegedly extracting the teeth of a corpse for money ritual. He was among several suspects paraded by the corps in Osogbo on Wednesday. Giving newsmen a brief of the offences committed by the suspects, the Field Commander, Osun Amotekun Corps, Mr Amitolu Shittu, said after Odusanya was caught, 12 teeth believed to have been extracted from the corpses he exhumed for money ritual were found in his custody. Shittu, who said the suspect initially claimed to be a herbalist with specialty in money ritual, added that two finger bones were also recovered from him. The Amotekun boss explained that the suspect was living in Sagamu, Ogun State, but was caught at a burial ground in Ilesa, Osun State, while exhuming a corpse for ritual. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has marked six residential houses and one plaza allegedly belonging to the embattled former Intelligence Response Team leader, Abba Kyari, in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, for investigation.
