The Bayelsa State Government has agreed to the workers’ demand for N30,000 as the new minimum wage. Wellington Obiri, Head of Civil Service, Bayelsa State made the promise when the leaders of the state’s Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) led a peaceful protest to the Government House, Yenagoa, on Tuesday. Addressing the workers, he said: “I want to assure Bayelsa workers that government is in support of your quest for minimum wage. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the September 22, 2018 election in Osun state, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was this Wednesday morning, arraigned before Justice I. E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja. The lawmaker and four others were docked based on a four-count charge of examination malpractices filed against them by the Nigerian Police. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, through the Prosecuting Counsel, Simon Lough, had on September 19, 2018 filed the charge against Adeleke and his four co-accused. Charged by the Police alongside Adeleke were Sikiru Adeleke, the Principal of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School; Alhaji Aregbesola Muftau, the Registrar of the School; Gbadamosi Ojo and a teacher in the school, Dare Samuel Olutope. According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, no fewer than 141 Nigerians including 11 pregnant women have voluntarily returned from Libya to Nigeria with the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration and the European Union. Mr Segun Afolayan, Chief Planning Officer, National Emergency Management Agency confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lagos. Afolayan said the Nigerians arrived at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, at about 10:45pm on Tuesday aboard a chartered Al-Buraq aircraft with registration number UZ189. The police say they have arrested 400 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) popularly known as Shiites, over the violent protest that rocked Abuja on Tuesday. Members of the group had taken to some parts of the nation’s capital in protest against the continued detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. The demonstration eventually resulted in a clash between the group and security operatives, leading to their arrest. FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr Bala Ciroma, explained that some members of the group were arrested for being in possession of about 31 bottles of petrol bomb made out of improvised explosive devices and other dangerous weapons. Yahaya Bello, the Governor of Kogi State has said the proposed strike action by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, over the new minimum wage will not hold on Nov. 6th. Chief of Staff to Governor Bello, Chief Edward Onoja stated this as labor unions protested at the Government House, Lokoja. Onoja urged the workers and unions to exercise patience as the government was working on the review of the new proposed minimum wage. The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) on Tuesday night announced that it has settled for N22,500 as the new minimum wage for government workers in the country. The announcement came hours after national leaders of organized labor mobilized public workers for rallies and insisted the November 6 nationwide strike will go on as planned. Labour has been demanding for N30,000 as new minimum wage while the federal government has declared an intention to pay N24,000. But in a communiqué issued at the end of a second emergency meeting of the NGF in Abuja, the governors explained that the salaried workers constitute not more than five percent of the total working population. They also noted that the interest of the larger population was taken into consideration before arriving at the N22,500 new national minimum wage. The Federal Government has confirmed a report, which ranks Nigeria first on the list of countries with a high record of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS in the world. The Government noted that local and international indications confirmed that Nigeria produces 30 percent of children born with HIV/AIDS globally. Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, told newsmen at the launch of a roadmap on the implementation of the National Treatment and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS in Abuja, Tuesday, that the situation was worrisome and requires collective action of all stakeholders, with the support of global partners to correct the statistics. The minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has escaped yet another tragedy while driving to Lagos after an inspection on Tuesday night (yesterday). It was gathered that the former governor of Rivers state, embarked on the monthly inspection of Lagos/Ibadan Railway Modernization Project which ended at about 8:30pm. While going back to Lagos, along Abeokuta road, the car which had a faulty brake started overheating with the oil leaking – as the minister’s car was parked along the road before his aides attended to it. The minister had to enter another vehicle. This latest incident is coming just two days after the minister and other passengers had a terrible experience during a flight from Port-Harcourt, Rivers state capital to Lagos (on Sunday). It was gathered that the flight via Arik airline experienced a two hour turbulence mid-air, leaving the passengers frightened and in panic as they engaged in serious prayers and praise worship aboard the plane. Following a full scale investigation order by the Benue State Commissioner of Police on the report of a missing child Bemdoo Ajekwe Aged 2yrs 6 months on 10/10/18 at North Bank area of Makurdi, one Joy Onyeabor 32yrs and Lucy Doosur 29yrs were arrested during investigation. The suspects both confessed that the said child was on that fateful day in company of his older brother who is about 7yrs old when they lured the older child with the sum of #50 to help them buy bread across the road leaving the younger child in their care before they whisked him to faraway Aba in Abia State. A former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, said yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the majority votes in the North but will not garner as much votes as he did in 2015. Asia Bibi has been on death row for eight years after she was found guilty of blasphemy against Islam’s prophet. The mum-of-four faced execution by hanging after she became the first woman to be sentenced to death under Pakistan’s draconian blasphemy laws.
