Yoruba Council Worldwide has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against the unilateral cancellation of Presidential election as proposed by former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Addressing a world press conference, Tuesday in Abuja, the council President, Aare Oladotun Hassan urged INEC to salvage and safeguard the ongoing process to conclusion and fruition predicated on free, fair and credible elections. Former Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, will take charge of the Benin Republic national team after signing a three-year contract. According to La Nouvelle Tribune, Rohr will be unveiled by the Benin Football Federation during a press conference on Friday. The Franco-German will take charge of the team from former Benin international, Moussa Latoundji, who has been in temporary charge of the Squirrels. Today, February 27, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold new elections for the presidency and the National Assembly in seven local government areas of Abia State. INEC Administration Secretary in the state, Mr. Clement Oha, said the elections will be held by 8 a.m at various polling units in Aba North, Aba South, Arochukwu, Obingwa, Osisioma, Ohafia and Umuahia North Local Government Areas. He explained that the fresh polls were necessitated by alleged discrepancies in the election procedures that were violent to some extent. Oha also said the reported skirmishes in the affected polling units during Saturday’s election necessitated the fresh polls. Scores of armed thugs besieged some polling units in the Oshodi and Itire areas of Lagos, setting some ballot papers and boxes on fire. The thugs who were all dressed in black and masked, arrived the area around 11.30 am on Saturday. Some voters, who could not run away when the thugs arrived were injured. Rivers State Governor, Nysome Wike has expressed disappointment with the functionality of the Biomodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission to his polling unit. Wike arrived at his polling unit 7 in Ward 9 in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area with his wife, Justice Suzzette Eberechi Wike at about 10:30 am. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has disclosed that 200,000 corps members have been deployed as ad hoc staff for 2023 general elections. The Director General, Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, made the disclosure at a press conference on the scheme’s preparedness for the forthcoming general elections in Abuja on Wednesday. According to Ahmed, corps members represent over 75 percent of the INEC ad hoc staff for the elections. He noted that the corps members expected to participate at the elections have already been trained by the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) both in and outside orientation camps.
