Nigeria 3-1 Algeria: Moses, Mikel fire Eagles to vital win

Chelsea duo Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel starred as Nigeria moved into full control of their World Cup qualifying group with a 3-1 home victory over Algeria in Uyo. Moses and Mikel were on target in the first half, before Nabil Bentaleb’s goal after the break gave Algeria hope of a comeback. But Moses scored his second in the final moments as Gernot Rohr’s side won their second straight game in the final stage of CAF qualification. The win puts the Super Eagles four points clear of nearest challengers Cameroon in Group B, with Algeria and Zambia a further one behind. Only the pool winners will make it to Russia in 2018. Moses had already created the best early chance in the first meeting between the two sides since the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations when he cut inside and fired wide, but the Chelsea winger made no mistake after 25 minutes. After collecting a pass from Mikel, Moses took advantage of poor defending from Hicham Belkaroui to fire into the bottom corner, before being bo

25 killed in Pakistan’s shrine blast

An explosion at a Muslim shrine in southwestern Pakistan killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens of others, local officials said. Hashim Ghalzai, a local district commissioner, told Reuters that the toll was based on initial reports, and could rise further. The blast occurred at the Shah Noorani shrine, located in Baluchistan province, about 100km north of the port city of Karachi. It took place while hundreds of people were inside, said Ghalzai. Dozens of wounded people were being moved to the nearby town of Hub and to Karachi, rescue official Hakeem Nasi told Geo TV. The government dispatched 25 ambulances from Hub to the shrine, said Akbar Harifal, provincial home secretary for Baluchistan. “Every day, around sunset, there is a dhamaal (ritual dance) here, and there are large numbers of people who come for this,” said Nawaz Ali, the shrine’s custodian. Baluchistan has seen some of the worst militant attacks this year in Pakistan, one of which was claimed by an Islamist m

Men in military gears, believed to be operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF), code-named Operation Delta Safe (ODS), on Saturday stormed two Ijaw communities in Warri South-West council area of Delta state, including Oporoza, the headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom. Although the mission of the men on the operation was not officially confirmed, The Nation  gathered it would be in connection with recent escalating militant activities in the area, resulting in the destruction of some critical oil facilities. Though efforts to get confirmation that the operations were carried out by the military were unsuccessful, it was gathered that the men broke into several houses in search of targeted persons, sending panic round by communities and causing residents to desert their homes and seek cover in the bushes. The soldiers were said to have arrived Oporoza at about 8am on Saturday in speedboats and gunboats, and immediately made their way into the community. The second community they reporte

World Pneumonia Day: NGO wants increased funding to eradicate childhood pneumonia

The Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health (PACFaH), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has urged the Federal Government to allocate more resources toward eradicating pneumonia among children. Mr Remi Adeseun, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN)-PACFaH Progamme Director, made the call at the commemoration of World Pneumonia Day on Saturday in Abuja. The theme of the event is “Mainstreaming/Prioritising Pneumonia in National Health Planning.’’ Adeseun said that Nov. 12 every year was set aside to raise awareness on pneumonia the world’s leading infectious and second killer of children under the age of five. He explained that a lot of people were ignorant of the death toll caused by the disease hence the number of cases of the scourge was increasing daily. Adeseun, however, urged governments at all levels to take the lead in sensitising the public to the preventive and curative measures of the disease, as it was with malaria and HIV and AIDS. He decried existin

Fuel price: Don’t test our resolve, NLC warns FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the federal government against testing the resolve of workers and other Nigerians by contemplating an increase in the prices of petroleum products. The congress also backtracked on its earlier support for the plan by the Buhari administration to borrow about $29 billion, saying the government should instead pursue and recover stolen government funds and use same to fund infrastructural development Speaking at the opening of its National Executive Council meeting in Sokoto, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, expressed concern over ongoing media campaign and contradictory statements from the NNPC and government officials on the rumoured plan to increase the pump price of petrol. He said the congress was totally opposed to any form of increase in prices of petrol as such an act would further increase the sufferings of Nigerians, adding that congress would mobilise Nigerians to resist any such increase. Wabba said: “While Nigerians are stil

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced N400 million poll bribe cash to the accounts of some firms and a charity organisation allegedly owned by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi. The accounts are those of Osborn La-Palm Royal Resort Ltd and Brass Engineering & Construction Nig. Ltd and David Umahi Faith Foundation. The Deputy Governor of the state, Fidelis Nwankwo and a former minister, Ambassador Frank N. Ogbuewu, were also said to have admitted collecting the cash. They were said to have admitted that based on the instructions of the governor, the N400 million was handed over to a branch of Access Bank in Abakaliki. There were indications last night that the EFCC might seal off all the companies implicated in the bribery scandal. Only the sum of N90 million of the said sum was said to have been refunded. The N400 million was the sum allocated to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State out of the N23,299,705,000 slush funds pr

Wedding bells ring in another royal household

When good things come, they often do so in droves. The circle has lately witnessed a spate of weddings involving eligible sons and daughters of monarchs and high chiefs alike, particularly in the South West. Last Saturday, it was the family of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Adetona, that celebrated the marriage of Idikat Motunrayo Adetoun, the ebullient daughter of the Ijebu monarch, to her beau, Olanrewaju Oladiran, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. The occasion was graced by prominent monarchs and politicians alike. On December 17, 2016, it will be the turn of the royal household of Oba Adedapo Tejuosho, the Osile of Oke-Ona Egba. Oba Tejuosho will be giving the hands of his daughter, Princess Layebi Tolulope Tejuosho, out in marriage at the Cathedral of St. James African Church, Idi Ape, Ago Oko, Abeokuta. Eagles, this is your life

Victor Moses owes his mates a world of duty to give his best today in Uyo against the Algerians. I imagine that Moses apologised secretly to his teammates for dodging the away tie against Zambia in Ndola last month. The manner in which Moses avoided the Chipolopolo jolted not just the coaches but the fans, who had watched him shine for his English Premier League side, Chelsea FC of England. It is easy for Moses to walk back into the team because we beat the Zambians at home. Had the Eagles been beaten in Ndola, Moses won’t be in Uyo. His presence therefore in today’s battle should be the elixir that the Eagles need to fly over the Desert Foxes at dusk. I have picked Moses out for this exercise because he appears to have the qualities needed to drive the Eagles to victory, akin to what he does at Chelsea, where his selfless displays have earned him accolades in the international media. Moses must distribute passes to his teammates who are freer to score, not shoot blindly like he di

Some politicians of the northern extraction who have been involving themselves in the politics of the  South West of the country  have been warned to keep away from the region in order not to incur the wrath of the conscious segment of the self-determination groups. This warning was handed down by the Coalition of Oodua Self-determination Groups (COSEG) in a release signed by the chairman of its Co-ordinating Council, Comrade Ifedayo Ogunlana, after a meeting of the council in Akure, Ondo State. COSEG stated that while it has severally warned the political class from the west not to intrude into northern enclave ,it will also demand from the north not to foist a candidate on the people of Ondo State and that efforts to do such will be resisted as evidenced by the rejection of former President Jonathan’s candidate in Lagos  during the last general election. According to the group, ”COSEG has consistently over the years rebuffed any intrusion into the South West electioneering process

Battle of Uyo: Kanu calls for massive support

.Insists on three points Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has urged Nigerians to turn out in large numbers to support the Eagles as they file out against Algeria on Saturday. The former Arsenal and Portsmouth ace opined that the Gernot Rohr tutored side has prepared adequately for the Uyo showdown, adding that all that is needed now is for soccer loving Nigerians to play the role of the 12th player. The two time African footballer of the year did not bother to predict possible score line of the match which the Algerians have equally dubbed a must win, but declared that only three points will be good enough. “”Come on let us all support our dear Eagles against Algeria. 3 points is all we want and our boys are ready and all the need is our support, “he submitted Friday. Meanwhile business especially sales of souvenirs has picked up in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital ahead of the tie billed for 5pm on Saturday. US-based Nigerian speaks on Trump’s victory

In as much as Mr Donald Trump is the president-elect, there’s nothing like Trump’s America. The United States is bigger than any POTUS. Regardless of the rhetoric that brought him to power, I don’t believe his actions would go against the ideals that has made America the country it is today. The strength of the country is based on the ideals of the founding fathers. And no, he dared not discard them. I certainly don’t think his presidency would spell doom for Nigerians or the African-American community. Even though one is tempted to be cynical, I’m quite optimistic that a Trump presidency would usher in an era of opportunities and economic prosperity for all. Let’s give President Trump a chance. Understandably, there’s palpable fear of a rise in racism. There will always be discrimination. But I think, find some solace in Trump’s victory speech where he said he would be a president for all. All we can do now is to be optimistic. Shola Ogbodo, a Nigerian immigrant in New York The pos

TFL: Young people say no to child marriage

Young people from public secondary schools across Lagos State will showcase the realities of child marriage in Nigeria using songs, poetry and drama to advocate for the elimination of Child marriage in the country on November 12th, 2016 at the 23 rd Annual Teenage Festival of Life (TFL). TFL was initiated by Action Health Incorporated (AHI) in 1993 with the aim of bridging communication gap between young people and adults and also to serve as an enabling forum where young people and relevant stakeholders meet to both identify the plights faced by them. This year, the event is focused on creating awareness on the issue of child marriage, its prevalence in Nigeria, impact – effects on the child bride, community and national development. Child marriage is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and despite laws against it, the practice still remains widespread. In Nigeria, 43% of girls are married before their 18th birthday and 17% are married before they

He urged Oshiomhole to be active politically as he (Oshiomhole) still has a lot to offer the country.  Bishop Akubeze told Oshiomhole to continue to fight for the poor and forgive those that offended his administration. Apparently referring to the deposition of the Ojuromi of Uromi, Zaiki Edenojie II, the Catholic Priest noted that power ‘is most efficiently used to forgive than to impose sanction.’ He said Nigerians must continue to fight corruption with good conviction so as not to depeened the gap between the rich and
