An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a student of Lagos State University (LASU), Afeez Ogunbowale, to 21 years imprisonment for involvement in armed robbery and rape of two fellow LASU students. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced Ogunbowale after finding him guilty of five counts bordering on conspiracy, rape and armed robbery. Taiwo said that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. She held that the testimony of the victims was compelling, adding that they were able to positively identify Ogunbowale as one of the culprits. “The defendant is hereby sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of armed robbery and 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of rape. “The sentences are to run concurrently,” she said. At least one person was killed and 14 injured in an attack on a Muslim group during a peace prayer session in the southwest Osogbo city of Nigeria on Sunday. Abdulganiy Ezra, a spokesman of the Coalition of Muslim Rights Activists of Nigeria (CONRAN), told reporters on Monday that Muslims were gathered for the special prayers in Oluode Aranyin area when attackers stormed the mosque with guns and machete. “Some masquerades stormed the mosque and unleashed mayhem on the Islamic faithful,” he said. He added that the attackers also vandalized vehicles parked within the premises of the mosque. Jacob Zuma, former president of South Africa, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court. Judge Sisi Khampepe, on Tuesday, said Zuma was found guilty of contempt of court following his refusal to appear before a graft panel. “The Constitutional Court can do nothing but conclude that Mr Zuma is guilty of the crime of contempt of court,” the Judge said. Recall that the 79-year-old Zuma was forced to step down as president in 2018 over corruption allegations. Former S. African President, Zuma, sentenced to 15 months imprisonment. South Africa’s former president, Jacob Zuma, has been sentenced to 15 months by the highest court in the country. He was sentenced on Tuesday, June 29, for contempt of court after he failed to appear at a corruption inquiry earlier this year. According to BBC, Zuma failed to appear at the inquiry led by deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo in February, after which the inquiry’s lawyers approached the constitutional court to seek an order for his imprisonment. The inquiry is examining allegations of high-level graft during Zuma’s period in power from 2009 to 2018. Zuma denies wrongdoing and has so far not co-operated. “Mr Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma is sentenced to undergo 15 months’ imprisonment. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said there was no plan to increase the official pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol, from N162 in July. Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC, Malam Mele Kyari stated this on Tuesday during a programme on Channels Television. He, however, noted that engagements were still ongoing with the Organised Labour to arrive at the appropriate price of the petroleum product, stating that until both parties arrive at a conclusion, the current price remains. According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari instructed the corporation not to make petrol price out of reach of Nigerians, “especially at this moment”. “What this means, however, is that we are taking out cash that could have been used for other things to pay under-recovery”, He said. The Director, Public Affairs Nigerian Communications Commission, Ikechukwu Adinde; and the Head , Corporate Communications, Nigeria Identity Management Commission, Kayode Adegoke, disclosed this in a joint statement on Monday titled ‘FG approves July 26 as NIN-SIM verification deadline as enrolment systems increase to 5,410 .’ According to the statement, the decision to further extend the deadline was made based on a request by stakeholders.
