Gbajabiamila: MDAs Not Implementing 2020 Budget

Image
House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has decried the non-implementation of projects and programmes for which funds were allocated in the 2020 budget. The Speaker warned that any expenditure of public funds outside of the Appropriation Act is a crime. The Speaker also said the government’s commitment to organised labour, which led to the suspension of the planned strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), must be respected and implemented “in clear conscience”. Gbajabiamila spoke at the National Assembly while welcoming House members back from their annual vacation. The Speaker noted that the failure to implement the projects contained in the budget is a betrayal of the public trust, which also undermines faith in the government and frustrates good efforts at national development. He warned that the House might be forced to take action against those who fail in implementing the annual budget, saying: “I sincerely hope it doesn’t come

Aisha Umar: Abaribe Kicks As Buhari Nominates Chairman, DG For PENCOM Board

Image
Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe has kicked against the nomination of Aisha Umar (North East) as Director General of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM). President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter urged the Senate to confirm the nomination of Oyindasola Oni as Chairman and Aisha Umar the DG of PENCOM Board respectively. President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, read the letter on the floor of the Senate during plenary. Abaribe however raised a point of order following the reading of the letter by Lawan. The Abia South Senator insisted that the nomination of a candidate from the Northeast to replace the former Director-General (DG) of PENCOM, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu from Southeast was in breach of the Act establishing PENCOM. He noted the National Pension Commission Act 2014 provided that “in the event of a vacancy, the President shall appoint replacement from the geo-political zone of the immediate past member that vacated office to complete the remaining tenure.” He m

Boko Haram Will Soon Be History – Yobe State Governor, Buni

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has declared that Boko Haram terrorism will soon be history, as terrorists cannot take away the goodwill of leaders and their people. Buni declared this yesterday in Maiduguri while commiserating with Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State over the recent attack on his convoy at Baga when he was going to resettle 521 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) households. The banditry in the North East has claimed over 32,000 lives and property worth N3.42 trillion in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states since 2009. “One thing insurgents cannot succeed in doing is taking away the good will from you and the people of Borno, including other Nigerians,” he said. Court Hears Suit Against Lagos Okada Ban December 15

The Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed December 15, 2020 to hear a suit praying for the reversal of the ban placed by the Lagos State Government on the operations of commercial motorcycles and tricycles, popularly known as okada and Keke Marwa, respectively, in parts of the state. A Lagos-based lawyer, Julius Ajibulu, who filed the suit before Justice Chuka Obiozor, said the ban on okada and Keke Marwa, without a replacement with an alternative means of transport, had subjected Lagosians to untold hardship and taken away the source of livelihood of the operators. The lawyer claimed that the ban and the attendant job loss had led to “massive unemployment” and an escalation in the rate of crime and insecurity in Lagos State. He said the ban violated his fundamental rights and those of other Lagosians under sections 33, 34, 36, 38, 41 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution. Ajibulu is praying the court to order “the immediate resumption of commercial operations and activities of tricyles

A major step towards the realisation of the 4th Mainland Bridge was today, taken by the State Government with the first stakeholders meeting on Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the construction and launch of the Bridge’s logo. The Governor emphasised that the proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge has been well integrated into the overall Lagos Master Plan in relation to transportation infrastructure, adding that the project allows for the first time, direct access from the large suburb of Ikorodu to the Island and the Lekki Free Trade Zone area. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday night issued an order suspending the September 1, 2020 hike in electricity tariffs for 14 days. Labour unions and the Federal Government had reached a truce on Sunday night to reverse the hike in electricity tariffs for 14 days, a development that prompted the halt of a nationwide strike by labour. War Of Words As Trump And Biden Square Off In First Presidential Election Debate

Image
Donald Trump and Joe Biden shouted over each other and insulted each other as moderator Chris Wallace lost control of the ‘dumpster fire’ that was the first Presidential debate on Tuesday night in Cleveland, Ohio. Barely had the night begun when the two candidates began name calling and fighting, with Biden asking Trump to shut up and slapping him down as the president repeatedly interrupted his answers. ‘Would you shut up, man?,’ a visibly exasperated Biden said about 20 minutes into the debate after Trump interrupted him again as he tried to talk about the Supreme Court. And, about 15 minutes later during a discussion on the COVID pandemic, he told Trump again: ‘Would you just shush for a minute?’ The president tried to command the stage from out of the box, interrupting his rival repeatedly to make his point, counter Biden and push himself into the conversation. It happened so many times that Fox News’ moderator Chris Wallace stepped in, asking the president to let Biden finis
