Governor Wike sacks paramount ruler

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state caused commotion in Rumuepirikom, his home country, when he sacked Eze Anthony Owabie, as the paramount ruler of Rumuepirikom community in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
Vanguard reports that Wike in a letter by the permanent secretary of ministryof chieftaincy and community affairs, Sir Samuel Ibemeru, dated September 16, said that the withdrawal of Eze Owabie as Nye-Nwe Eli Rumuepirikom was with immediate effect.The sack of the paramount ruler has caused apprehension in Rumuepirikom community as elders and youths have bickered over the governor’s decision.Though the governor did not give reasons for his decision to remove the ruler, the letter noted that the action of the governor was in exercise of powers vested on him as the governor of the state.
However, the spokesman for the embattled Eze, Mr. John Ihua, described the action of the state government as Ihua described the purported sack of the paramount ruler as a move to damage the process of selection of a king in Rumuepirikom. He also threatened, that his principal (Owabie) would approach the law courtto seek the reverse of the governor’s order.
